Cambodian people from all walks of life gathered this morning at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh to celebrate the 72nd Anniversary of National Independence from France (Nov. 9, 1953 – Nov. 9, 2025).
The auspicious ceremony took place under the royal presidency of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, with the participation of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate; Samdech Moha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly; and Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia; as well as many other senior officials and civil servants.
Foreign ambassadors accredited to Cambodia were also present at the annual celebration.
On the occasion, His Majesty the King lit the Victory Flame at the Independence Monument, which will remain burning for three days to symbolise the nation’s pride, independence, and unity.
The entire ceremony was broadcast live on local television and radio stations. Public areas were decorated with patriotic banners and slogans marking the Independence Day celebration. In the evenings during the three-day event, fireworks displays will illuminate the skies over the Chaktomuk River.
On the eve of the celebration, delegations from the Parliament, government ministries and institutions, and associations laid wreaths at the Independence Monument and the Royal Statue of the late King-Father Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk (Preah Borom Ratanak Kaudh), located nearby.
Notably, Nov. 9, 2025, also marks the 72nd founding anniversary of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF).
