Cambodia, Nicaragua Hold First Round of Political Consultations to Deepen Bilateral Ties
AKP Phnom Penh, October 22, 2026 —
Cambodia and Nicaragua have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors following the successful conclusion of their first round of political consultations in Managua on Oct. 18-19.
The consultations were co-chaired by H.E. Meas Kim Heng, Secretary of State of Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. Valdrack Jaentschke, Co-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, together with H.E. Laureano Ortega Murillo, Presidential Adviser for the Promotion of Investments, Trade and International Cooperation of Nicaragua.
Both sides underscored the importance of further deepening bilateral relations, established in 1994, as the two countries mark the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic ties this year. They welcomed progress in bilateral cooperation, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Political Consultations on Issues of Common Interest and an Agreement on Visa Exemption for Holders of Diplomatic and Official/Service Passports in Phnom Penh in April 2026.
The two delegations exchanged views on political and economic developments in their respective countries and discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in trade and investment, culture, tourism, parliamentary relations and other areas of mutual interest.
At the multilateral level, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation through international platforms, including the United Nations and the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC). They also emphasised the importance of promoting regional and global peace, stability and development, upholding international law, and resolving disputes peacefully through diplomatic and legal means.
During the discussions, H.E. Meas Kim Heng briefed his Nicaraguan counterparts on the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, reiterating Cambodia’s commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for sovereignty and the non-use of force in accordance with international law.
During his visit to Managua, H.E. Meas Kim Heng also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Gustavo Porras Cortés, President of Nicaragua’s National Assembly. They discussed prospects for further strengthening and elevating the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of their peoples. H.E. Gustavo Porras Cortés also expressed his intention to invite members of the Cambodian Parliamentary Friendship Group with Nicaragua to visit Nicaragua in the near future.
The first round of political consultations concluded successfully, with both sides agreeing to arrange a mutually convenient date for the second round to be held in Phnom Penh in 2028.
