PM Hun Manet: MSMEs Are Backbone of Cambodia’s Economy and Key Government Partners
AKP Phnom Penh, October 22, 2026 —
Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Cambodia’s national economy and key partners of the Royal Government in creating jobs, generating household income and strengthening economic resilience, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has said.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while presiding over the official launch of the National Strategy for the Development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) 2026-2030 on Thursday morning.
He highlighted the important role MSMEs have played in creating employment, increasing incomes, supporting people’s livelihoods, promoting local economic development and contributing to the resilience of the national economy.
“Indeed, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, or MSMEs, are the backbone of the national economy and key partners of the Royal Government in creating jobs, generating household income, promoting domestic production and strengthening economic resilience,” Samdech Thipadei said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the government’s focus on MSME development was not new. Previous administrations, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, now President of the Senate, had laid the foundations for peace, stability, infrastructure development, a legal framework and a favourable business environment.
These foundations have enabled the private sector and domestic enterprises to grow and become more closely connected with regional and global economies, he added.
According to the 2022 Cambodia Economic Census, the country had approximately 753,670 business establishments and enterprises, including 60,503 small and medium-sized enterprises.
MSMEs provide employment to approximately 2.98 million people, including more than 1.84 million women, accounting for over 60 percent of the total workforce.
