Cambodian Information Minister Urges Journalists to Prioritise Accuracy Over Speed
AKP Phnom Penh, August 19, 2026 --
Information Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra called on journalists Wednesday to exercise heightened caution when producing and sharing breaking news, warning that speed must not come at the expense of accuracy or lead to the spread of disinformation.
Speaking at an orientation session on media ethics and responsible reporting, the Minister emphasised the need for journalists to maintain high professional standards amid the rapid growth of digital media and social networks.
"Journalists must take full responsibility for the news they publish by prioritising truth, accuracy, and verified sources," H.E. Pheaktra told an audience of over 100 participants at the Ministry of Information’s Media Training Centre. He added that reporters must avoid content that compromises public dignity, social morality, or national cultural values.
The orientation targeted night-shift reporters, media outlets actively engaged in live news coverage, and officials from key ministerial departments, including Information and Public Relations, Legal Affairs, Audiovisual, and Inspection.
H.E. Pheaktra noted that ongoing guidance aims to reinforce media roles and responsibilities – particularly during fast-moving events – to ensure public reporting remains accurate, balanced, ethical, and respectful of individual rights.
