Preah Vihear Promotes Decent Livelihoods with Agroecological Practices
AKP Phnom Penh, February 14, 2025 --
An agricultural cooperative and partners in Chey Sen district of Preah Vihear province are introducing agroecological practices, especially with sesame farming, and securing markets for the produce—an effort that boosts local livelihoods.
Despite huge benefits, market supply of organic sesame as well as other agricultural products remains limited due to challenges ranging from high production costs to lack of cultivation techniques to safeguard them from pests and diseases.
To address the issues, the Put Samaki Vattanak Meanchey Agricultural Cooperative, in cooperation with local agriculture experts and other partners, is capacitating farmers with technical agroecological practices for locally viable agricultural products.
Funded by a grant from the Agroecology Learning Alliance in Southeast Asia (ALiSEA), the initiative also helped connect farmers to the markets.
The approach has significantly reduced production costs, got rid of the use of chemical fertiliser that harms the health of farmers and consumers, and secured decent livelihoods and income for the locals, especially sesame farmers.
