ASEAN Observer Team Visits Chey Chumneas Border Checkpoint to Assess Post-Ceasefire Situation
AKP Phnom Penh, June 06, 2026 -- ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), led by the Head of Mission under the Philippine Chairmanship, continued their mission to observe, verify, and report on the border situation at Chey Chumneas Border Checkpoint in Thmar Da commune, Veal Veng district, Pursat province.
According to a press release issued by the Spokeswoman of Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, the mission, facilitated by Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG), took place on June 6 at 11:50 a.m. and aimed to review compliance with and implementation of measures contained in the Joint Declaration following the ceasefire.
The Ministry stated that the area had experienced incursions, the installation of barbed wire, and the deployment of shipping containers by Thai military forces, which Cambodia said continue to prevent many displaced Cambodian families from returning to their homes.
Cambodia said the AOT’s visit to the area highlighted the importance of resuming land demarcation work through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) as soon as possible.
The Ministry referred to Point 3 of the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated Dec. 27, 2025, which supports survey and demarcation efforts to facilitate the safe, peaceful, and dignified return of affected civilians.
Cambodia reiterated that it does not recognise any change to international boundaries through the use of force or unilateral territorial claims and maintained that developments in the area do not affect Cambodia’s legal position regarding its borders.
The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to fully and faithfully implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the GBC, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand dated Oct. 26, 2025, and all related agreements.
Cambodia said these efforts are intended to support rapid recovery, restore normal conditions, and promote lasting peace and stability.
