Ministry of Mines and Energy Affirms Electricity Subsidy
AKP Phnom Penh, February 04, 2025 --
The Ministry of Mines and Energy has affirmed its commitment to continue subsidising electricity tariffs for households, agriculture, and tourism.
Its Minister H.E. Keo Rottanak made the affirmation in an annual meeting to review work achievements and set forth new direction of the Electricity Authority of Cambodia, held in Phnom Penh on Feb. 3.
The RGC through the Ministry of Mines and Energy will make its efforts in stabilising electricity tariffs despite fuel, coal, and imported electricity continue to rise in price, he said.
“The Royal Government of Cambodia will not raise electricity prices to maintain economic stability in difficult times, even though the costs of fuel, coal, and imported electricity sources keep increasing,” he said.
Last September, the ministry announced the reduction of electricity prices for industrial and agricultural consumers.
It has also reduced electricity fare for factories, helping them gain competitiveness by lowering the cost of products.
The country’s total installed electricity capacity amounted to 5,044 megawatts (MW) last year, up 8.5 percent from 4,649 MW in 2023.
The main sources of renewable energy in the Kingdom are hydropower, solar energy and biomass energy. The country also buys electricity from neighbouring countries, especially during the dry season.
