Cambodia Reaffirms Stance to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Combat Climate Change
AKP Phnom Penh, October 13, 2026 -- Cambodia has reaffirmed a firm stance to participate in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and countering climate change through technological modernisation, committing alongside the international community to lower emissions to the absolute lowest level.
The reaffirmation was made by H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, as he presided over the official opening of the “Artificial Intelligence for Climate Action Forum 2026” in Phnom Penh on Oct. 13.
Through this forum, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth called on the international community to step up AI technology transfer and financial support to developing nations to ensure the equitable use of technology and collective action to save the planet from climate change threats.
He added that adopting new technologies, particularly AI, will enhance environmental governance in Cambodia, a nation currently vulnerable to climate change, minimising risks to advance toward a green and carbon-neutral economy.
On that occasion, Ms. Vladanka Andreeva, UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, emphasised the vital role of AI technology in actively supporting developing nations to build resilient economic and social systems and respond swiftly to climate change.
Mr. Fred Ontonri, a member of the UNFCCC TEC, noted that hosting the Artificial Intelligence for Climate Action Forum 2026 in Cambodia reflects how the nation is not merely a victim of climate change, but an active player bringing modern technological solutions to address the global climate crisis and safeguard the planet.
The Artificial Intelligence for Climate Action Forum 2026 is a two-day event taking place from Oct. 13 to 14, 2026, in Phnom Penh.
It aims to demonstrate the unified, strong stance of Cambodia, alongside other developing nations, small island states, and the international community, in combating climate change and committing to minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, it serves as a bridge for transferring AI technology to developing countries to build climate resilience.
