NBC Refutes Rumors of Instability in Cambodia’s Banking System
AKP Phnom Penh, October 2, 2026 -- The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has rejected rumours circulating on social media claiming that certain banking and financial institutions are facing difficulties or could encounter problems in the near future, describing the reports as baseless and misleading.
In a statement issued on Oct. 2, the central bank said the unverified reports risk harming the interests of the public and banking service users, while undermining confidence in the wider banking system.
The NBC strongly condemned the dissemination and intentional distortion of false information aimed at destabilising the economy and called on competent authorities to take legal action against those involved.
The central bank also urged the public not to disseminate or share information without clear sources, and to verify claims through official channels, particularly the NBC and relevant competent authorities.
According to the NBC’s report on the banking sector’s performance during the first half of 2026 and its work plan for the second half of the year, the banking system has maintained strong capital and liquidity positions despite the impact of external and domestic factors.
Credit grew by 4.6 percent, while the gross non-performing loan (NPL) ratio stood at 9.6 percent.
As of June this year, customer loans rose by 4.6 percent to 256.7 trillion Riel (US$64.2 billion), while customer deposits increased by 4.4 percent to 257.4 trillion Riel (US$64.4 billion).
Capital increased by 3 percent to 42 trillion Riel (US$10.5 billion).
