The Spokesperson Urges Youth to Lead Fight Against Fake News Through Responsible Social Media Use
AKP Phnom Penh July 17, 2026 -- The Ministry of Information has called on young people to become responsible role models on social media, urging them to help combat fake news, promote credible information, and contribute to national security and social stability in an increasingly digital society.
The appeal was made by H.E. Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, during the second phase of the nationwide "Say No to Fake News" campaign held at Banteay Srei High School in Siem Reap province on July 15.
The event brought together approximately 1,000 students, teachers, education officials, and local authorities to raise awareness about the dangers of misinformation and encourage responsible digital citizenship among Cambodia's youth.
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Tep Asnarith stressed that young people – particularly secondary and high school students – should use social media responsibly by learning to distinguish factual information from false or misleading content before sharing it online.
"Youth should become positive role models on social media by sharing useful and truthful information that benefits themselves, their families, and society," he said. "Responsible online behaviour not only protects individuals from the dangers of fake news but also contributes to national development and strengthens social harmony."
H.E. Tep Asnarith encouraged students to use digital platforms to expand their knowledge, support education, and inspire future generations rather than spreading unverified information that could harm communities or create unnecessary public concern.
The campaign also highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy as social media becomes the primary source of information for many Cambodians.
Mr. Ly Bunna, Director of the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Education, Youth and Sport, voiced strong support for the Ministry of Information's anti-fake news initiative, saying digital literacy has become an essential life skill for students in both urban and rural areas.
Cambodia has a population of more than 17 million, with about 59 percent actively using Facebook. Meanwhile, more than 30 percent of Generation Z users – aged between 14 and 29 – prefer TikTok, making young people a crucial force in promoting factual information and countering online misinformation.
