AKP Phnom Penh, June 23, 2026 -- Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior has reminded political parties of legal provisions governing political financing following media reports alleging that certain political parties had received support from foreign entities.

In a press release issued on June 23, 2026, the Ministry referred to a report published by The Sunday Guardian on June 21, 2026, which alleged that some political parties in Cambodia had received contributions from foreign sources and were planning to merge into a single political party ahead of the 2027 Commune/Sangkat Council Election and the 2028 General Election.

The Ministry stated that if such allegations are proven to be true, acceptance of contributions from foreign entities in any form would be inconsistent with Cambodia’s Constitution, the Law on Political Parties, and other relevant legislation.

According to the Ministry, the Law on Political Parties prohibits political parties from receiving financial or other forms of contributions from foreign institutions, foreign companies, foreign nationals, or organizations financed by foreign sources.

The statement noted that, under the law, violations may result in financial penalties imposed by the Ministry of Interior and could also lead to requests to the Supreme Court for the dissolution of the political party concerned.

The Ministry further highlighted that political parties are prohibited from being subordinate to, or operating under the direction or control of, any foreign political party or foreign government. Depending on the severity of any violation, legal measures may include suspension of activities or dissolution through judicial procedures.

At the same time, the Ministry commended political parties that continue to operate in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws, stating that such compliance contributes to strengthening the rule of law, supporting national development, and promoting liberal multi-party democracy while safeguarding national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity.
