AKP Phnom Penh, June 01, 2026 --

The Royal Government of Cambodia has launched a temporary market in the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey to restore livelihoods for more than 2,800 families displaced by Thai invasion, officials said Monday.

H.E. Kitti Sangahapundit Kun Kim, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), officially opened the market facility on Sunday in Sla Kram village, Svay Chek district. The move follows Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet’s directive to ensure “no citizen is left behind” during resettlement efforts.

“This temporary market is part of the Royal Government’s strategic plan to gradually restore livelihoods,” H.E. Kun Kim said at the temporary housing community managed by the Cambodia Veterans Association. “The Royal Government aims to provide not just shelter, but sustainable daily income opportunities. This market ensures a centralised, orderly, and hygienic trading space.”

Residents, who previously relied on scattered, home-based vending, welcomed the organised space. “We used to sell goods around our houses, which was very difficult during rain and wind,” said vendor Sok Ny. “Having a designated market gives us encouragement and makes it easier to earn steady income.”

Others praised the dual-track support of daily subsidies paired with long-term economic infrastructure, calling it a strong source of security.

During his visit, H.E. Kun Kim encouraged home-based traders and reiterated that Royal Government financial aid will continue as families adapt. The market opening highlights Cambodia’s  systematic approach to disaster and displacement management – focusing on economic dignity and social welfare.
