Cambodia Protests Thai Gunfire Incident near O’Smach Border Checkpoint
AKP Phnom Penh, May 24, 2026 --
The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) on Sunday stated that Thai military forces fired 22 rounds of gunfire in the area of the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province.
According to an official report from Military Region 4 of the RCAF, the gunfire occurred between 9:24 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. on May 24 in Cambodian territory currently being illegally occupied by Thai military forces.
The report added that the gunfire was unprovoked and originated from the Thai side.
Following the incident, the liaison team of Cambodia’s Military Region 4 sent a formal protest letter to the liaison team of Thailand’s Army Area 2, requesting the Thai side to verify the facts and take measures to strictly enforce troop discipline.
Cambodia also called on the Thai side to fully comply with the Joint Statement of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated Dec. 27, 2025.
