Cambodia to Repatriate Thai National Detained for Illegal Entry on Humanitarian Grounds
AKP Phnom Penh, May 14, 2026 --
Cambodian and Thai authorities are coordinating the repatriation of a 58-year-old Thai national detained last month for illegally entering Cambodian territory, officials said Wednesday.
The individual was apprehended on April 26 in Kok Chanry village, Samrong city, Oddar Meanchey province, after crossing deep into Cambodian soil. According to Cambodian authorities, the detention was carried out in accordance with national laws to safeguard security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
"Any unauthorised entry into the sovereign territory of Cambodia is subject to strict legal measures," an official statement emphasised.
Following the incident, Thailand’s 2nd Army Area contacted Cambodia’s 4th Army Region to request cooperation regarding the detainee. The Cambodian side accepted the request in good faith and is currently reviewing the case through established bilateral border mechanisms.
Cambodian authorities confirmed that the man is currently in safe custody and is being treated well.
While reiterating that the protection of national sovereignty remains a non-negotiable obligation, Cambodia maintained its commitment to resolving border issues peacefully.
Officials noted that the repatriation is being handled based on humanitarian principles and the spirit of bilateral cooperation.
The Thai national is expected to be handed over to Thai authorities at an appropriate time once all legal procedures and reviews are finalised.
