Cambodia Unveils Homegrown Climate-Resilient Hybrid Maize Varieties
AKP Phnom Penh, March 26, 2026 -- The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) has successfully developed two new high-yield hybrid maize varieties, after six years of breeding and purification works.
H.E. Touch Bun Hour, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), led a technical team on Mar. 25 to inspect and evaluate two new hybrid maize varieties at a demonstration farm in Thbong Khmum province.
MAFF said maize varieties that are set to be officially released soon include the codes BH-3577 and BH-4187, adding that these varieties are selected to withstand climate change and reduce the use of inputs – fertilisers and pesticides – to help ease the burden and increase income for farmers in difficult situations.
The new varieties provide high yields and respond to market demand in a global crisis situation.
After up to six years of breeding and purification by technician teams of the Ministry’s General Directorate of Agronomy, this achievement clearly demonstrates Cambodia's ability to conduct advanced research, he said.
"These two types of the best seeds clearly reflect "Khmer can do it" and have the ability to independently produce the seeds without relying entirely on imports," said H.E. Touch Bun Hour.
Cambodian maize is well-known for its good quality and adaptability. It is high in carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins and may be utilised in a number of cuisines. The main varieties grown in Cambodia are red, white, and violet maize.
Agriculture remains one of the four essential pillars supporting the Cambodian economy, providing a critical foundation alongside the tourism industry, construction and real estate sectors, and garment, footwear, and travel goods manufacturing.
Maize was planted about 96,000 hectares throughout Cambodia, according to Cambodia Agriculture Survey 2023.
The MAFF is committed to further promoting research and development to ensure that all farmers have a better livelihood and can stand strong in all circumstances of the global crisis, H.E. Secretary of State said.
