Cambodian Governor Distributes Aid to Students Displaced by Border Incursions
AKP Phnom Penh, January 16, 2026 -- In a humanitarian gesture focused on the welfare and education of children affected by the Thai troops invasion, Banteay Meanchey Provincial Governor H.E. Oum Reatrey distributed clothing to over 200 displaced students on Thursday afternoon.
The Governor, accompanied by his wife Mrs. Chey Nary and their children, visited temporary classrooms at the Chan Sy Pagoda in O’Chrov district.
The site serves as a refuge for children displaced from their homes following the Thai invasion along the Cambodian-Thai border in late 2025.
During the visit, H.E. Oum Reatrey commended the dedication of volunteer teachers providing instruction to the displaced children. He emphasised the critical importance of continued education, urging guardians and parents residing at the shelter – particularly those from the formerly affected villages of Chouk Chey and Prey Chan – to ensure their children attend lessons.
"Even in a temporary situation, education must not be disrupted," stated the Governor. "The provincial administration has organised these temporary classes to guarantee every child receives knowledge and learning for their future."
The distribution aims to support children who have been unable to return to their homes after a 21-day period of hostilities. The incursions resulted in the destruction of property and the subsequent erection of barriers, including container blockades and barbed-wire fencing, by Thai military personnel in the contested border area.
The initiative underscores the provincial administration's commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens during crisis, providing reassurance and essential supplies to children as they continue their studies under temporary circumstances.
