U.S. Unveils US$45 Million Aid Plan for Cambodia and Thailand
AKP Phnom Penh, January 09, 2026 -- The United States of America will provide a total of US$45 million in financial assistance to Cambodia and Thailand to support displaced persons, demining efforts, and the fight against scam centres.
Speaking at a virtual press briefing this afternoon, H.E. Michael George DeSombre, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said that of the total amount, US$15 million will be allocated for border stabilisation and assistance to displaced people, US$10 million for mine clearance, and US$20 million for combating online scams, drug trafficking, and other transnational crimes.
He noted that the financial assistance package is still under discussion and in progress, and that further details will be announced in the near future.
H.E. Michael George DeSombre is currently in Thailand and is scheduled to meet with Cambodian officials in Phnom Penh tomorrow to discuss the enforcement of the ceasefire.
