Cambodia Reaffirms Official Border with Thailand, Rejects Unilateral Actions
AKP Phnom Penh, January 03, 2026 -- Cambodia has clarified that Thailand’s actions—such as the placement of shipping containers, installation of barbed wire, or raising of Thai flags—do not constitute legal evidence of an internationally recognised border between the two countries, said H.E. Pen Bona, Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit.
Speaking at a press briefing this morning, H.E. Pen Bona stressed that Cambodia will continue to pursue border survey and demarcation work strictly through lawful and mutually agreed mechanisms.
“The placement of containers, the installation of barbed wire, or the raising of the Thai flag does not determine the international boundary between the two countries,” he underlined.
The spokesperson reaffirmed the Royal Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Cambodia–Thailand international boundary as inherited from the Commission for the Delimitation of the Boundary between Indochina and Siam, in full accordance with international law. This includes adherence to the principle of the intangibility of frontiers (uti possidetis juris), the Franco-Siamese conventions and treaties, relevant maps, and the procès-verbaux of the Commission of the Abornement of the Boundary between Indo-China and Siam, as well as all agreements and documents mutually recognised by both sides.
“Cambodia does not recognise any border demarcation resulting from the use of force,” he said, adding that the Royal Government has lodged several diplomatic protests with Thailand to firmly protect the border line in accordance with international law.
Meanwhile, the Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, stated that Cambodia continues to strictly adhere to the ceasefire agreement to ensure peace and stability, while closely monitoring its implementation by the Thai side.
She emphasised that implementing the ceasefire is a shared responsibility and must be demonstrated through both words and concrete actions to ensure its sustainability.
Cambodia firmly opposes the use of force and all illegal activities, and hopes that Thailand will fully respect the spirit of the ceasefire to enable a return to normal relations in the future, she added.
Cambodia will also strengthen the activities of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to observe and verify compliance in accordance with agreed measures, and welcomes friendly countries willing to participate in efforts to maintain peace along the border.
