Chinese Special Envoy in Phnom Penh to Discuss De-escalation of Cambodia-Thailand Conflict

H.E. Deng Xijun, Special Envoy for Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, is in Phnom Penh to discuss efforts to de-escalate and bring an end to the ongoing armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.
According to a press release issued this afternoon by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during this visit, H.E. Deng Xijun paid a courtesy call on Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, on the morning of Dec. 19. He also called on and had extensive discussions with H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Tea Seiha, Minister of National Defence; and H.E. General Mao Sophan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army.
During these meetings, both sides underscored the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and emphasised that peaceful dialogue remains the only viable path toward resolving differences.
Samdech Thipadei emphasised the importance of fully respecting and implementing agreed bilateral frameworks and established mechanisms, which remain essential tools for addressing differences and achieving a fair, lasting, sustainable and peaceful solution in accordance with international law.
On this occasion, Samdech Thipadei expressed his sincere gratitude to China, in particular to H.E. Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, for his leadership and personal efforts to restore peace between the two countries and to maintain regional peace and stability. He underscored that Cambodia has fully and firmly adhered to the ceasefire since its entry into force and has consistently upheld the principles of non-use of force and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law. These principles will continue to guide Cambodia's approach to the border situation between Cambodia and Thailand.
H.E. Deng Xijun reaffirmed that China will continue to play a constructive role in facilitating dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand with a view to promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes. He emphasised that China, as a friend of both Cambodia and Thailand, stands ready to contribute to all efforts aimed at realising an immediate ceasefire and returning to rebuilding trust between the two neighbouring countries.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed his appreciation for China's efforts to help end the conflict and restore peace, enabling the peoples of both countries to live side by side in peace, stability, good neighborliness, and shared prosperity. He also thanked China for its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to support affected communities.
