U.S. Expands Phnom Penh Exchange Centre as Cambodia Ties Hit 75 Years
AKP Phnom Penh, December 19, 2025 --
The United States on Friday inaugurated an expanded exchange centre in the Cambodian capital, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations and targeting a youth-led demographic through education and STEM initiatives.
The AmCam Exchange, located at Exchange Square, was reopened in a ceremony attended by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ms. Bridgette Walker.
The expansion comes as the U.S. seeks to deepen "people-to-people" ties in a country where the majority of the population is under 30.
"This centre is not just a building; it is a gateway to new opportunities and a symbol of the long-standing friendship between our two countries," Ms. Walker said, noting the facility's role in providing leadership skills and English-language training.
First established in 2005 at the University of Cambodia, the centre has hosted more than one million visitors over two decades. The upgraded facility will house the EducationUSA advising centre, which provides guidance for students seeking to study at American universities.
The project was supported by a mix of educational partners and private sector firms, including Hongkong Land, Starbucks, and Hard Rock Cafe.
Globally, the American Spaces network comprises more than 700 locations in 140 countries, serving as key platforms for millions of people to connect with the United States and their local communities.
In Cambodia, the U.S. maintains four such centres – in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Kampong Cham – aimed at fostering civic engagement and promoting U.S. educational exchange.
