Teaching and Learning in Four Districts of Battambang Province Temporarily Postponed
AKP Phnom Penh, December 10, 2025 --
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) this afternoon announced the temporary suspension of teaching and learning activities in education institutions across four districts of Battambang province: Samlot, Kamrieng, Sampov Loun, and Phnom Preuk.
MoEYS stated that the postponement is due to security concerns arising from the Thai military’s invasion of Cambodia’s territory.
The suspension takes effect from Dec. 10, 2025 onwards, until further notice, to ensure the safety of teachers, education staff, and students, and to prevent any harm caused by Thai artillery shelling into Cambodian territory.
According to the Ministry, as of this morning, a total of 635 schools across six provinces bordering Thailand — Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Pursat, Koh Kong, and Battambang — have been temporarily closed, affecting 163,528 students and 5,441 teachers due to the Thai military’s aggressive and indiscriminate attacks.
Since Dec. 7, the Thai military has renewed its attacks on Cambodian territory and expanded operations across multiple locations in Preah Vihear, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Battambang, and Pursat provinces. These operations have involved the use of heavy weapons, F-16 fighter jets, and toxic gas, resulting in civilian casualties, damage to homes, temples and health centres, the closure of hundreds of schools, and the displacement of thousands of civilians along the border. Cambodia has no choice but to counterattack in self-defence against military operations that violate its territorial integrity, after exercising more than 24 hours of utmost restraint.
