Cambodia's Third Extension Request to Complete Anti-Personnel Mine Clearance Approved
AKP Phnom Penh, December 06, 2025 —
The Twenty-Second Meeting of State Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention) held in Geneva, Switzerland on Dec. 1-5, officially approved Cambodia's request for a third extension — covering the period 2026-2030 — to complete the clearance and destruction of anti-personnel mines under Article 5 of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, setting a new deadline of Dec. 31, 2030.
The Meeting's unanimous decision underscores the Royal Government of Cambodia's sustained leadership, strong commitment and substantial efforts in meeting its obligations under the Convention, underlined a press release of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) issued this evening.
It also reflects the confidence and continued support of friendly nations, development partners, and mine action stakeholders.
To date, Cambodia has made substantial progress, clearing 3,300 square kilometres of contaminated land and destroying more than four million landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERWs). These achievements have significantly enhanced community safety, improved livelihoods, and contributed to the country's socio- economic development.
“Cambodia expresses its sincere appreciation to all donors, partners, and stakeholders for their invaluable support and contributions,” the press release added.
Nevertheless, State Parties recognised that considerable challenges remain, particularly in heavily contaminated border areas where difficult terrain, limited access, and extensive minefields continue to threaten communities. Overcoming these obstacles will require ongoing efforts, strengthened partnerships, and additional resources.
On behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, CMAA renewed its call to friendly nations, development partners, mine action operators, the private sector, and all relevant stakeholders to continue standing with Cambodia in advancing the vision of a "Mine-Free Cambodia 2030."
