AKP Phnom Penh, December 01, 2025 --
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, today inaugurated the 9th National Scientific Conference on Agricultural and Rural Development, emphasising the vital role of scientific research and technological advancement in securing sustainable economic, social, and environmental development.
The two-day conference, held on Dec.1-2 at Meanchey National University in Serei Sophorn city, Banteay Meanchey province, is centred on the theme: “Excellence in Agricultural Technology for Sustainable Socio-Economic and Environmental Development.”
Presiding over the opening ceremony, which was attended by senior Ministry of Education officials, Banteay Meanchey Governor H.E. Oum Reatrey, and representatives from 14 universities and institutes nationwide, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron underscored that scientific research is the bedrock of national progress.
He specifically highlighted agriculture as the backbone of Cambodia's economy, stressing that accelerating modernisation through innovation and advanced technology is essential. This, he argued, will boost productivity and quality, critically enhancing Cambodia’s competitiveness in both regional and global markets.
The Deputy Prime Minister urged universities and research institutes to intensify problem-based research that directly addresses the practical needs of farmers and rural communities. He stressed that a focus on technological excellence must ensure that development not only spurs economic growth but also rigorously protects environmental sustainability.
H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron also underlined the continuous need for human resource development in the sector. He noted that training programmes must rapidly adapt to keep pace with technological change, empowering graduates to become agents of change and future leaders capable of driving sustainable development within their communities.
The 9th National Scientific Conference is a key national platform designed for researchers, academics, and students to exchange expertise, present new findings, and strengthen collaboration among higher education institutions and development partners, all contributing to Cambodia’s long-term vision for agricultural and rural sustainability.
