Unique Cashews on Kulen Mountain Offer Untapped Potential
AKP Phnom Penh, April 07, 2025 --
Cashew crops grown on the slopes of Kulen Mountain possess a "unique characteristic" not found in current cashew farming communities.
This distinctive feature lies in their traditional variety, lower yield, and natural, rain-fed cultivation methods. Notably, these cashews are largely grown without chemical fertilisers or pesticides, yet boast a remarkable kernel ratio of nearly 32 percent.
H.E. Khim Finan, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, stated on April 7 that the absence of chemical use further enhances their appeal to consumers. The region attracts millions of domestic tourists annually, in addition to international visitors, all of whom have shown support for the local cashew nuts.
"We could view this as a challenge," H.E. Khim Finan noted. "However, looking at it from another perspective, these unique attributes can also be a significant potential that other regions lack, especially the possibility of 'on-site export' due to the already substantial presence of international tourists just waiting for us to provide them with even better products."
H.E. Khim Finan expressed his hope that a modern agricultural cooperative for cashew cultivation in the Kulen Mountain area could be established soon.
This initiative aims to contribute to the sustainable development of this local community.
