PM: Believe the Government in Addressing Impacts of U.S. Reciprocal Tariff
AKP Phnom Penh, April 04, 2025 --
The Cambodian Prime Minister called on the public to have faith in the government in addressing the implications of the U.S. recent reciprocal tariff on Cambodia.
The call by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet was highlighted in a news release on the results of the weekly plenary cabinet meeting he chaired at the Peace Palace this morning.
The announced reciprocal tariff could inevitably impact Cambodia, he said, stressing that the implication could not be as bad as the assumption made by some social media users who try to terrify the public with the move.
Samdech Thipadei urged his fellow Cambodians to remain calm and believe in the government, who will negotiate with the U.S. for an appropriate solution.
Seemingly, the U.S. has experienced trade deficits with many trade partners; therefore, the administration of President Donald Trump on April 2 announced the planned reciprocal tariffs on the partners, including 49 percent on Cambodia, 48 percent on Laos, and 46 percent on Vietnam.
The Prime Minister explained that the “50-percent discounted” reciprocal tariffs are not the U.S. retaliation against the countries that had imposed tariffs on the U.S., but a measure to lighten up its trade deficit.
