Thmar Roung Beckons Visitors with Natural Beauty for Khmer New Year Festivities
AKP Phnom Penh, April 04, 2025 --
Just a brief seven-kilometre detour from National Road No. 4 reveals the serene Thmar Roung Ecotourism Site, a natural haven poised to become a prime destination for Khmer New Year celebrations.
Situated in Prey Prasith village, Bak Roteh commune, Kampong Seila district, near the Preah Sihanouk-Kampong Speu provincial border, this 682-hectare retreat offers cascading waterfalls, verdant forests, and a tranquil escape for both local and international tourists.
Thmar Roung’s allure lies in its pristine environment, where visitors can enjoy the refreshing mountain air and the soothing sounds of flowing water. Local communities have established charming huts near the waterfalls, providing spaces for dining, relaxation, and enjoying the cool, clear streams. The site's continuous water flow, sourced from the Kravanh Mountain Range, ensures its appeal throughout the year.
As the Khmer New Year approaches, local authorities are extending a warm invitation to travellers seeking a natural respite. The site, located approximately 115 kilometres from Phnom Penh, is easily accessible via a short diversion from the main highway. Visitors can immerse themselves in the region's biodiversity, swim in natural pools, and capture memorable moments on flower-adorned swings.
Pho Phorn, a committee member responsible for Thmar Roung’s natural forest conservation, highlighted the site's year-round accessibility and its popularity during major holidays. He encouraged increased visitation during the Khmer New Year, emphasising the dual benefits of tourism: income generation for local communities and the promotion of Cambodia's natural heritage.
Returning visitor Rin Sokha praised Thmar Roung’s enduring appeal, noting its refreshing ambiance even during the dry season. A tourist from Takeo province lauded the site's exceptional cleanliness, a feature she found particularly appealing.
The influx of tourists also provides vital economic support to local vendors. Mai Than, a food seller nearing 70, expressed gratitude for the income generated by tourism, which sustains her livelihood in her old age. Ath Sreymao, another food stall owner, reiterated the site's consistent attraction, even during dry months, and encouraged visitors to experience the area's lush landscapes and abundant wildlife during the Khmer New Year.
Thmar Roung’s significance extends beyond leisure. It has been incorporated into a study tour under the Ministry of Environment's “Sustainable Landscapes and Ecotourism in Cambodia” project, running from April 2–5, 2025. This initiative aims to bolster ecotourism development through collaboration with the private sector, encompassing visits to other key destinations such as the Cardamom Mountain National Park, Tatay Wildlife Sanctuary, Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary, and Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary.
As the Khmer New Year festivities draw near, Thmar Roung is poised to welcome visitors with its natural splendor, offering a unique opportunity to unwind, reconnect with nature, and create lasting memories amidst Cambodia's captivating landscapes.
