The historic Wat Phnom will host a three-day celebration from April 14 to 16, 2025. Mrs. Dor Samphors, Spokesperson for the Phnom Penh municipal administration, outlined the diverse programme:
Day 1: The festivities will commence with the welcoming of the New Year’s deity, followed by a sacred Buddha statue procession, the creation of sand stupas, and a traditional Buddha bathing ceremony; Day 2: Attendees can enjoy captivating traditional performances, engage in lively folk games like "Chol Chhoung" (scarf throwing), "Leak Kanseng" (scarf hiding), and tug-of-war, and be entertained by classical and contemporary music; Day 3: The celebration will culminate with traditional dances, a variety of entertainment programmes, an exhibition showcasing Khmer cultural artifacts, and a delightful display of Khmer cuisine.
Meanwhile, Walk Street will transform into a hub of cultural activities for five days, from April 12 to 16, 2025 from the Royal Palace to Wat Phnom Historical Site, along Preah Sisowath Quay. Mr. Pich Ponreay, head of entertainment for Walk Street, detailed the lineup: The street will feature a diverse range of traditional games and performances, including "Leak Kanseng," tug-of-war, Khmer shadow puppetry (Lakhon Sbek), Lakhon Khol (masked theatre), Lakhon Yike (Yike theatre), Chapei Dang Veng (Cambodian two-stringed, long-necked guitar) musical performances, dances, and Khmer traditional costume show.
Officials are urging citizens to participate in the celebrations, emphasising the importance of preserving and promoting Cambodia’s cultural heritage. The events aim to foster national pride and attract both domestic and international tourists.
