Cambodian authorities extended a heartfelt welcome to returning migrant workers from Thailand at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint on April 1, 2025, ahead of the upcoming Khmer New Year celebrations. 

The event, marked by the distribution of souvenirs and expressions of gratitude, underscored the Royal Government's commitment to its overseas workforce.

The Poipet International Border Police, in collaboration with various ministries and local authorities, organised the welcoming ceremony, distributing scarves, bottled water and bread to the returning workers. H.E. San Kimhong, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, and Brigadier General Y Chamroeun, Chief of the Poipet International Border Police, led the initiative.

H.E. San Kimhong emphasised that the gesture reflected the Royal Government’s dedication to its citizens, particularly migrant workers, under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet. 

He described the distribution of souvenirs as a token of encouragement and a warm welcome for those returning to celebrate the traditional Khmer New Year with their families. "This initiative demonstrates our Royal Government’s deep commitment to our people," he stated, urging workers to travel safely and enjoy their time with loved ones during the mid-April festivities.

Brigadier General Y Chamroeun highlighted the seamless cooperation between border police and relevant authorities in facilitating the border crossing process. He added that the souvenirs symbolised hospitality and appreciation for the workers' contributions to Cambodia's economy. "We wish them health, safety, and happiness as they reunite with their families," he said.

The returning migrant workers expressed their gratitude for the warm reception and gifts, pledging to adhere to traffic laws and safety regulations during their journey home. They conveyed their eagerness to celebrate the Khmer New Year with their families in unity and joy.

This welcoming event showcased Cambodia's strong sense of solidarity with its migrant workers, who play a crucial role in the nation's economic development. The friendly atmosphere at the Poipet International Checkpoint, a key gateway for returning Cambodians, was further enhanced by the joint effort of authorities.

Adding to the facilitation of the workers' return, the Cambodian and Thai governments have waived border crossing fees for Cambodian workers travelling home for the Khmer New Year, easing their journey to celebrate this significant cultural occasion.
