Cambodia Gears Up for Influx of Returning Migrant Workers for Khmer New Year, Waives Re-Entry Fees
AKP Phnom Penh, March 31, 2025 --
The Cambodian Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training has intensified preparations at the Poipet International Border Gate in Banteay Meanchey province to facilitate the smooth return of migrant workers celebrating the upcoming Khmer New Year.
Senior ministry officials conducted an on-site inspection today to ensure efficient processing and provide necessary assistance to returning citizens.
This proactive measure follows a significant bilateral agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand during an official visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet to Thailand. A key outcome of this agreement is the Thai royal government’s decision to waive the Re-Entry Permit fee for Cambodian migrant workers during the Khmer New Year period, spanning April 1 to May 15, 2025.
The fee exemption applies to Cambodian workers possessing valid passports or Travel Documents (TD) and Non-Immigration L-A work visas with validity extending beyond May 15, 2025. This initiative also benefits children under 18 years old, registered as dependents and holding permission to remain in Thailand beyond the specified date.
"We are committed to ensuring a seamless and welcoming return for our migrant workers during this important festive period," stated an official from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training. "The waiver of the Re-Entry Permit fee is a testament to the strong cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand, aimed at easing the burden on our citizens."
The ministry's preparations at the Poipet border include streamlined immigration procedures, information booths, and support services to address any potential challenges faced by returning workers. Officials anticipate a significant surge in traffic during the coming weeks and are working diligently to manage the influx effectively.
The Khmer Traditional New Year is a time for family reunions and cultural festivities. The waiver of re-entry fees is expected to significantly alleviate financial burdens for Cambodian migrant workers, enabling them to fully participate in the celebrations with their families.
