Thailand, Vietnam Strengthen Trade and Security Ties
AKP Phnom Penh, February 27, 2025 —
Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa has concluded his official visit to Vietnam, reaffirming Thailand’s strategic partnership with the country ahead of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s planned visit later this year. During meetings with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính and Foreign Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn, discussions focused on trade, security, and regional connectivity. Both sides committed to strengthening economic integration and expanding bilateral trade, with a target exceeding 25 billion US dollars in 2025.
Talks covered trade expansion, supply chain collaboration, and investment opportunities for Thai businesses in Vietnam. Officials agreed on reducing trade barriers and increasing cooperation in green energy, retail, and infrastructure projects. A high-level strategic working group is being considered to coordinate economic, security, and social policies between the two nations. Vietnam also pledged support for Thailand’s regional tourism strategy, “Six Countries, One Destination,” seeking to boost cross-border travel across Southeast Asia.
Security discussions included a proposal for regular defense ministry-level meetings to enhance military cooperation and defense technology exchange. In social development, both countries explored expanding partnerships in education and healthcare, encouraging private sector involvement in knowledge exchange and medical advancements. A joint task force is expected to be formed to set clear objectives ahead of the Thai Prime Minister’s visit.
Maris also met with executives from FPT Corporation, a leading Vietnamese technology company, to discuss AI and digital economy cooperation. He proposed collaboration between Thailand’s public and private sectors with FPT to drive industrial and technological advancements. Thailand is looking to integrate FPT’s business model into its national innovation strategies to strengthen economic growth.
