AKP Phnom Penh, February 23, 2025–

Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, H.E. Thor Chetha, conducted on Feb. 22 an inspection on the progress of a major water drainage and diversion project aimed at mitigating flooding in Phnom Penh and surrounding provinces.

Accompanied by ministry officials and provincial water resource department representatives, H.E. Minister Thor Chetha visited key project sites, included the Choeung Ek Canal System, spanning over 27 kilometres in Phnom Penh, which includes the Anlong Kong and Sak Sampov pumping stations in Khan Dangkor; the restoration of O’Khsach Canal, a 27.7-kilometre stretch linking northern Roleang Chrey to Boeung Tamoak in Samrong Tong district, Kampong Speu province; the rehabilitation of the Prek Pheam Sathya waterway, covering approximately 18.7 kilometres in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province.

As of now, the project has reached approximately 90 percent completion.

The minister emphasised that the initiative aligns with the strategic vision of Cambodia’s Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet to modernise Cambodia’s water infrastructure. 

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has been actively implementing a large-scale flood prevention and water diversion plan for Phnom Penh and surrounding areas. 

This includes the rehabilitation of 10 canals, totaling about 260 kilometres, and the construction of 366 hydraulic structures, including four pumping stations and a water gate.

Commending the progress, the minister urged the technical teams to maintain high construction quality in accordance with engineering standards and ensure timely completion as planned.
