Cambodian, Lao Youth Leaders Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
AKP Phnom Penh, October 6, 2026 --
Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Vice President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the CPP Central Youth, held bilateral talks with H.E. Thongly Sisoulith, Member of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union, at the CPP headquarters in Phnom Penh on Tuesday afternoon.
The meeting took place during a four-day official visit to Cambodia by a high-level delegation of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union, led by H.E. Thongly Sisoulith, from Oct. 5 to 8, 2026, at the invitation of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.
According to a CPP’s press release, during the meeting, Samdech Thipadei expressed his deepest condolences over the passing of H.E. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, a member of the Political Bureau of the LPRP Central Committee and President of the National Assembly of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. He described the deceased as an outstanding political figure who had devoted his efforts and wisdom to serving Laos and had actively contributed to strengthening the traditional friendship and close cooperation between the two countries and peoples.
Samdech Thipadei warmly welcomed the Lao delegation and congratulated H.E. Thongly Sisoulith on his election as Secretary-General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union and as a member of the Central Committee for the 2026-2030 term.
Both sides reviewed the development of Cambodia-Laos relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1956, highlighting the progress made across various sectors and the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive and Long-Lasting Strategic Partnership in 2019.
As the two countries mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, the leaders underscored the longstanding friendship, good-neighbourliness and mutually beneficial cooperation that underpin their close ties, which are also rooted in shared traditional and cultural bonds.
Regarding youth cooperation, both sides spoke highly of the progress made during more than a year of implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the CPP Central Youth and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union for 2025-2027, signed in February 2025. They noted that the memorandum had helped translate their commitments into practical joint activities.
The two sides also agreed on key strategic directions for further strengthening youth cooperation, including maintaining close contact and holding regular meetings; continuing mutual support in human resource development and the training of young leaders; and promoting exchanges and experience-sharing in research and youth development across such fields as education, culture, sports, healthcare, digital technology and entrepreneurship.
They further agreed to organise youth exchange forums and encourage youth organisations of the two parties in border provinces to develop joint programmes to promote peace, friendship and mutual benefit.
