Cambodia, Lithuania to Jointly Combat Disinformation, Strengthen Media Exchanges
AKP Phnom Penh, August 20, 2026 -- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Cambodia, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo, has carried out an official diplomatic mission to the Republic of Lithuania, presenting his credentials to President H.E. Gitanas Nausėda and holding a series of high-level meetings with key officials and business leaders.
The mission was aimed at deepening bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including trade, political dialogue, media exchange, education, digital technology, and cultural affairs.
During discussions with officials from the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo reaffirmed Cambodia’s firm commitment to peace, international law, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Drawing on its history of war and reconciliation, Cambodia maintains that peace is an essential prerequisite for economic development, public welfare, and stable international relations.
Cambodia opposes the use of force, advocating instead for diplomacy, dialogue, and international legal frameworks. The Ambassador underscored the critical importance of respecting state sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity under the principles of the United Nations Charter.
This position aligns with views expressed by Lithuanian Foreign Minister H.E. Kęstutis Budrys during his visit to Cambodia in April 2026, where he highlighted the significance of upholding international law and territorial sovereignty.
In meetings with Ms. Kristina Babičienė, Vice-Director of the Indo-Pacific Department, and Mr. Darius Skusevičius, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both sides exchanged views on bilateral matters and shared regional and international interests.
H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo expressed Phnom Penh's interest in enhancing cooperation with Vilnius across trade, investment, clean energy, cybersecurity, GovTech, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. Cambodia also aims to strengthen ties within the Cambodia-EU and ASEAN-EU frameworks, positioning Lithuania as a strategic partner to bridge connectivity between Southeast Asia and Europe.
The Ambassador proposed establishing formal linkages between Cambodian national media outlets under the Ministry of Information and Lithuanian counterparts.
The collaboration aims to facilitate content sharing, professional exchanges, and journalist visits to promote accurate coverage of economic, cultural, and educational developments in both countries.
The two sides also discussed joint efforts to combat fake news and disinformation in the digital era through fact-checking methodologies, media literacy programmes, journalism training, and the use of artificial intelligence tools to detect misleading information.
A key highlight of the mission was the official presentation of credentials to Lithuanian President H.E. Gitanas Nausėda. H.E. Chea Chanboribo conveyed personal greetings and best wishes from His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia to the Lithuanian President and people.
Following the ceremony, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo and H.E. Nausėda discussed mutual efforts to build stronger diplomatic ties and promote long-term bilateral cooperation.
Shifting focus from political diplomacy to economic engagement, the Cambodian delegation engaged with leaders of the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce to convert diplomatic goodwill into commercial partnerships.
Cambodia presented opportunities to export key agricultural products to European markets – including milled rice, cashews, pepper, coffee, and processed agricultural goods.
Lithuanian investors were encouraged to explore business ventures in Cambodia, particularly in agro-industry, clean energy, FinTech, cybersecurity, and logistics.
Both sides explored the potential for direct business-to-business connections and future Lithuania – Cambodia trade missions, leveraging Cambodia as a gateway to ASEAN and Lithuania as an entry point to the European Union market.
