AOT-KH Conducts Field Visit to Poipet Border Area to Verify Post-Ceasefire Situation
AKP Phnom Penh, August 20, 2026 -- The Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) on Thursday coordinated a field visit for the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) to observe, verify and report on the situation at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province following the implementation of the ceasefire.
The field visit, conducted at 9:20 a.m. on Aug. 20, was led by the Head of Mission of AOT-KH from the Philippines at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint, located in Kbal Spean 1 village, O’Chrov district, Poipet municipality.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, the AOT-KH also observed affected civilian areas. The Ministry stressed that these locations belonged to innocent civilians and were used for their daily businesses, but suffered severe damage and destruction and have yet to resume normal operations.
The Ministry stated that the affected sites were damaged during airstrikes by Thai military forces using F-16 fighter jets in December 2025. It further noted that the locations are in Phsar Kandal village, Phsar Kandal district, Poipet municipality, approximately 8.2 kilometres from the Poipet International Border Checkpoint and deep inside Cambodia’s sovereign territory.
Cambodia continues to fully support the ASEAN Observer Team and emphasises the importance of strengthening its role and mandate through on-site observation and verification missions to ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire.
The Ministry of National Defence said such missions are essential to upholding the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on Oct. 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements, while promoting transparency, accountability and mutual trust.
