The Royal Government of Cambodia has formally lodged a strong protest against Thailand’s continued violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Monday evening, Thai armed forces continued to construct new military bunkers encroaching upon Cambodian territory in the area of the Thmor Da International Border Checkpoint, Thmor Da commune, Veal Veng district, Pursat province, on Aug. 6.

The Ministry also noted that on Aug. 7, the Royal Thai Government announced a plan to extend Thailand’s national power grid to the areas of Ta Krabey Temple and Hill 333.

Cambodia said these activities amounted to attempts to consolidate Thailand’s unlawful occupation of Cambodian territory, in violation of Thailand’s obligations under existing bilateral treaties and agreements concerning the demarcation of the land boundary between the two countries.

The Royal Government strongly protested against the continued and expanding encroachment by Thai armed forces and reiterated its position that the areas in question are situated entirely within Cambodian sovereign territory, as defined and delimited by the 1:200,000-scale maps produced by the Commissions of Delimitation of the Boundary between Indo-China and Siam pursuant to the 1904 Franco-Siamese Convention and the 1907 Treaty.

The ministry said the activities also breach Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU 2000) between Cambodia and Thailand on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary, as well as Item 1 on de-escalation measures of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on Dec. 27, 2025.

The Royal Government further reaffirmed that it does not accept any boundary line or territorial claim unilaterally asserted by Thailand and that the activities in question shall not prejudice Cambodia’s legal rights or position concerning its international boundary.

Cambodia urged Thailand to immediately cease such activities in the areas concerned, as well as in other areas that Cambodia says have been unlawfully occupied by Thai armed forces since last year.

Such steps, Cambodia said, would help de-escalate the situation, build mutual trust, facilitate the peaceful settlement of disputes and restore peace, stability and good-neighbourly relations along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

The Royal Government reaffirmed its commitment to resolving all boundary disputes with Thailand, as well as with its other neighbours, exclusively through peaceful means, in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements.

At the same time, Cambodia stressed that it would continue to uphold its position that borderlines must not be changed by force.
