Cambodia, UK Agree to Diversify Bilateral Relations and Cooperation

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet met with H.E. Ms. Seema Malhotra, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Indo-Pacific at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom, on the sidelines of the 3rd ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi on Tuesday afternoon.
During the meeting, Ms. Malhotra welcomed the positive progress in Cambodia-UK relations and highlighted the close cooperation between institutions of both countries, particularly in public financial management and efforts to attract greater British investment to Cambodia.
She also underlined the importance of the UK’s strategy to diversify its international engagement through stronger partnerships with ASEAN countries, aiming to deepen connectivity and share experience and best practices across the region.
In response, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed appreciation for the UK’s contributions to Cambodia’s socio-economic development, particularly its support for humanitarian mine clearance and efforts to expand bilateral trade.
The Prime Minister noted that diversification creates broader opportunities for market access and stronger trade partnerships and welcomed closer engagement between the UK and ASEAN, including Cambodia, especially in economic and commercial cooperation.
Both sides also exchanged views on expanding cooperation in education, recognising growing interest among Cambodian students and the sector’s long-term benefits for both countries. The Prime Minister encouraged continued UK support and broader collaboration in this area.
In addition, discussions covered strengthening cooperation in defence and security, particularly in addressing transnational crime. Samdech Thipadei highlighted Cambodia’s ongoing measures and international cooperation to combat technology-enabled fraud and online scam activities.
He reaffirmed that the Royal Government would continue implementing strict measures until criminal networks are eliminated, while Ms. Malhotra expressed appreciation for Cambodia’s firm approach.
Besides, both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of shared concern and stressed the importance of enhanced international cooperation to promote global peace and prosperity.
