PM Hun Manet Highlights Strategic Role of Press Freedom in Digital and AI Era
AKP Phnom Penh, May 03, 2026 --
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has underscored that in the context of the digital and artificial intelligence era, press freedom is not only a fundamental right but also a strategic capability in promoting information security.
In a message marking the 33rd World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026, the Prime Minister emphasised that press freedom must go hand in hand with respect for the law, professional ethics, integrity, social responsibility, and the safeguarding of public order and national security.
He noted that ensuring information security, protecting national confidential information during times of crisis, and maintaining media order should not be viewed as restrictions on press freedom. Instead, these measures are essential to guaranteeing access to information for citizens, ensuring the quality, reliability, and safety of information, and protecting national security and social stability.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted that the Royal Government of Cambodia has identified the information, telecommunications, and media sectors as key pillars supporting good governance, strengthening trust between the state and citizens, and safeguarding national information sovereignty. The government continues to prioritise the promotion of press freedom and freedom of publication, while encouraging the development of a professional, ethical, accurate, and trustworthy media landscape aligned with digital advancements.
The Prime Minister also pointed to recent survey results by the Ministry of Information in 2026, which indicate that press freedom and media order in Cambodia are rated positively. These findings reflect ongoing progress in both the rights and professional quality of journalism, as well as a balanced approach between freedom and media regulation in the digital age.
He further commended journalists, media professionals, and content creators for their contributions to maintaining peace, promoting justice, and fostering a peaceful society. Professional and responsible journalism, he said, remains a cornerstone of democracy.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei expressed appreciation to national and international journalists, media practitioners, and the public for their role in promoting accurate information and raising awareness, particularly in reporting on recent developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
The Prime Minister concluded that as the world undergoes rapid technological transformation and geopolitical uncertainties, press freedom must continue to serve as a key driver in safeguarding peace, territorial integrity, and responsible use of emerging technologies, in line with this year’s theme, “Shaping a Peaceful Future.”
