AKP Phnom Penh, April 12, 2026 -- Phnom Penh’s former international airport (Pochentong) has been transformed into a public recreational space, welcoming thousands of visitors on its first day of a nine-day trial opening during the Khmer New Year holiday.

The site, officially known as the old Phnom Penh International Airport, has been decorated and temporarily opened to the public from April 11 to 19, 2026. On the opening day alone, approximately 15,000 people visited the area to explore, relax, take photos, exercise, and enjoy various outdoor activities.

Visitors were given access to several historically significant areas within the airport, including the terminal building and control tower constructed in the 1950s, the VIP passenger zones, aircraft parking areas, and sections of the runway. These locations highlight the rich history of Cambodia’s civil aviation sector.

In addition to sightseeing, the public also enjoyed traditional cultural performances such as Troddi dance, Chhay Yam dance, and Pinpeat music, offering an opportunity to experience and appreciate Khmer cultural heritage in a unique setting.

Parts of the airport have been decorated with displays and banners featuring traditional Khmer New Year celebrations to enhance the festive atmosphere.

The public are allowed to enter the old airport from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.
