Cambodia’s Fishery Sector Shows Positive Results in 2025
AKP Phnom Penh, January 28, 2026 --
The Fisheries Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) reported positive outcomes in the management, conservation, and development of fishery resources in 2025.
Speaking at an annual meeting held on Jan. 27, H.E. Poum Sitha, Delegate of the Royal Government and Director General of the Fisheries Administration, said that in 2025 the effective management, conservation, and development of fishery resources contributed to an increase in fish catches, particularly freshwater fish, by approximately 10 percent compared to 2024.
He emphasised that the growth in freshwater fish catches was the result of concerted efforts by fisheries authorities, armed forces, sub-national administrations, relevant institutions, and fishing communities, as well as active public participation through information sharing.
According to the Fisheries Administration, the number of Mekong River dolphins increased from 104 to 111 in 2025, reflecting progress in conservation efforts.
MAFF’s Secretary of State, H.E. Has Sareth, commended the Fisheries Administration for fulfilling its duties with responsibility and dedication.
He recommended further strengthening the protection and conservation of fishery resources, as well as intensifying crackdowns on illegal fishing activities.
In addition, he encouraged the promotion of aquaculture development by attracting private sector investment and enhancing the quality, safety, and value chains of fishery products to support standardised production.
