Cambodian PM Hails Victory Day as Nation’s 'Second Birth'
AKP Phnom Penh, January 07, 2026 --
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on Wednesday commemorated the 47th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge, hailing the date as a "second birthday" for the nation and a tribute to those who sacrificed to end the genocidal regime.
In a statement released on social media on Jan. 7, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet honoured the veterans and youth of the previous generation whose struggle led to the liberation of the country in 1979. He noted that the victory ended three years, eight months, and 20 days of "darkness."
"January 7 is a day to remember the great heroism and gratitude we owe to the previous generation for the legacy of life they left for the Cambodian people," the Prime Minister said.
He emphasized that the date serves as the foundation for modern Cambodia, transforming the country's international reputation from the "Killing Fields" into a nation defined by peace and multi-sectoral development.
