France: Return of Cambodian Soldiers Marks Significant Step in Ceasefire Implementation
AKP Phnom Penh, January 01, 2026 -- The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs today issued a statement welcoming the release on Dec. 31 of the 18 Cambodian soldiers who had been detained in Thailand since July.
“Their return to Cambodia marks a significant step in the implementation of the ceasefire between the two countries, which has been in effect since Dec. 27 following the meeting of the General Border Committee,” the statement emphasised.
To consolidate the ceasefire and ensure the full implementation of the declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 26, France encouraged both parties to continue dialogue and fully comply with their international commitments, particularly in the areas of demining, the return of displaced populations, and the fight against online scams.
The ministry also called on both sides to continue taking all necessary measures to achieve a peaceful resolution of the dispute, in full respect of international law and with guarantees for the protection of civilian populations on both sides of the border.
“Alongside both countries and the ASEAN Chairmanship, France will continue to support efforts toward a lasting peace,” the statement concluded.
