International Community Welcomes Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire, Urges Effective Implementation
AKP Phnom Penh, December 27, 2025 --
China, Japan, Australia, Germany, and the European Union today issued separate statements welcoming the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand and calling on both sides to fully and effectively implement the accord.
“It is great news that Cambodia and Thailand have reached consensus on a ceasefire. It is hoped that what has been agreed upon will be effectively implemented, and that the life of the two peoples will return to normal soon,” said H.E. Wang Wenbin, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia.
He also reaffirmed China’s firm commitment to promoting talks for peace and said China would continue to play a constructive role in restoring peace.
“The Government of Japan will continue to make various efforts to promote de-escalation of the situation including the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, such as diplomatic efforts, in coordination with relevant countries including the United States and ASEAN countries,” said Mr. Kitamura Toshihiro, Press Secretary at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For its part, Australia expressed appreciation for the ASEAN Observer Teams and their important, ongoing role. “We urge Cambodia and Thailand to take further steps to achieve a fair and durable peace and to alleviate the humanitarian impact of the conflict,” the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.
H.E. Dr. Johann Wadephul, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, praised the crucial role played by the ASEAN Presidency and the ASEAN Observer Team in preventing a resurgence of violence. “The ceasefire agreement can only be a first step toward lasting peace — to achieve this, dialogue must continue,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Anouar El Anouni, Spokesperson for the European Union’s Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed the EU’s readiness to provide any support needed and thanked ASEAN for its positive contribution in this result.
Cambodia and Thailand earlier this morning signed the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting, which includes agreements on an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, the resumption of peaceful border demarcation and demining work, respect for international law, and the return of detained Cambodian soldiers, in line with the U.S.- and ASEAN-facilitated Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration.
