Commerce Ministry Strengthens Trade Resilience Amid U.S. Policy Shifts
AKP Phnom Penh, May 09, 2025 —
At a meeting of ministry-level executives chaired by the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Commerce, led by Permanent Secretary Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, presented Thailand’s export performance for 2024 and early 2025. In March 2025 alone, exports hit a record high of $29.55 billion US Dollars, up 17.8%, marking the ninth consecutive month of growth.
For the full year 2024, Thailand's exports totaled $300.53 billion, growing 5.4% year-on-year. During the 1st quarter of 2025, exports reached 81.53 billion Dollars, a 15.2% increase, resulting in a trade surplus of 1.08 billion dollars or about 2.7 billion baht.
To prepare for fast-changing global dynamics, the ministry is strengthening its digital public service systems and response strategies. A key focus is adapting to trade pressures from global superpowers, particularly the United States.
The U.S. trade policy task force, established by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in January, is chaired by the Permanent Secretary of Commerce. This body monitors trends, assesses risks, and formulates integrated policy responses.
In February, a Thai delegation visited the United States to engage with both public and private sectors. The visit aimed to build mutual understanding, address business concerns, and formally communicate Thailand’s trade stance. The ministry also coordinated with related agencies and consulted with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB) to align on negotiation strategies.
The ministry urged stakeholders to help resolve trade barriers, support essential imports, and encourage Thai businesses to expand investment in the U.S. to strengthen long-term economic security.
Additionally, the ministry is accelerating the use of digital technology and innovation to drive trade, including the implementation of an electronic document system for internal and external communications.
