Funan Techo Canal Project Expected to Be Completed as Planned
AKP Phnom Penh, April 18, 2025 --
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet received here at the Peace Palace this morning Mr. Wang Tongzhou, Chairman of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the parent company of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) which is responsible for constructing the Funan Techo Canal.
During the meeting, Mr. Wang updated the Premier on the project’s progress, noting that agreements on key documents for the implementation phase have been reached.
The CCCC chairman reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to delivering the project on schedule, with high standards of quality, positioning it as a model of excellence.
In response, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet praised CRBC’s important role in Cambodia’s infrastructure development, especially its work on the Funan Techo Canal. The Prime Minister underscored the Royal Government’s strong focus on the canal, describing it as a historic project that will connect Cambodia’s river system to the sea route, unlocking new potential for investment in the industrial, agricultural, logistics, and real estate sectors — ultimately contributing to national economic growth.
Samdech Thipadei welcomed the finalisation of key implementation documents and expressed confidence that the Funan Techo Canal project would be completed successfully and on schedule.
Groundbreaking for the mega project took place on Aug. 5, 2024. The Funan Techo Canal will stretch 180 kilometres, with an upstream width of 100 metres, a downstream width of 80 metres, and a total depth of 5.4 metres, accommodating two navigation lanes. Construction is expected to take approximately four years under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
The canal will link Prek Takeo of Mekong River to the sea in Kep province crossing four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep with a total of 1.6 million people living on either side of the waterway.
