Khmer New Year Holidaymakers Set New Record
AKP Phnom Penh, April 18, 2025 --
Nearly 24 million national and international visitors travelled across Cambodia during the three-day Khmer Traditional New Year holiday, from April 14 to 16, marking a 9.9 percent year-on-year increase.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Tourism on Thursday, the total included approximately 23.86 million domestic tourists and around 115,000 international visitors.
Visitor numbers steadily climbed over the holiday period, with 5,685,223 recorded on the first day, 8,365,724 on the second, and 9,926,494 on the final day, the report highlighted.
Phnom Penh capital topped the list of destinations, welcoming over 2.86 million visitors, followed by Siem Reap province with about 2.75 million, Kampong Cham with 2.74 million, Prey Veng with nearly 2.4 million, and Battambang with 1.74 million.
The Ministry of Tourism attributed the record-breaking turnout to the wide range of Sankranta events and entertainment programmes organised nationwide, along with the country’s stable and peaceful environment, which encouraged safe and worry-free travel.
“This surge in tourist activity has generated significant economic benefits at both national and local levels. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, food courts, and tourist resorts in nearly every province were at or near full capacity. The private sector has expressed strong optimism for the future of Cambodia’s tourism industry, which is clearly moving in the right direction,” the ministry stated.
During last year’s Khmer New Year celebrations, Cambodia recorded approximately 21.81 million domestic and international visitors.
