Cambodian UN Peacekeeping Unit Celebrates Khmer New Year in Central African Republic
AKP Phnom Penh, April 16, 2025 —
Cambodian Peacekeeping Unit 98, specialising in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), currently serving under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Bangui, Central African Republic, celebrated the Khmer Traditional New Year, the Year of the Snake, with a joyful cultural gathering.
The celebration was graced by Brigadier General Nicolae Orose, Commander of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) in the Central African Republic, alongside other military officers, deputy commanders, and both national and international guests currently stationed in the "Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic mission zone (MINUSCA).
The Cambodian contingent commander emphasised that the New Year celebration was a vibrant cultural event that brought together UN peacekeepers from Cambodia and other nations. The event aimed to showcase Khmer traditions, culture, and customs to the international community while also promoting unity and camaraderie among peacekeeping forces deployed in the Central African Republic.
On this special occasion, Major General Sem Ratana, First Vice Chairman of the National Committee and Acting Director General of National Centre for Peacekeeping Force, Mine and ERW Clearance (NPMEC), sent a formal New Year greeting letter to the Cambodian peacekeeping forces deployed abroad.
In the letter, Major General Sem Ratana praised and highly valued the dedication and accomplishments of Cambodian peacekeepers serving with the UN in various countries, including Sudan, South Sudan, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He commended their tireless efforts, physical and mental commitment, and their responsible performance over the past year, which brought significant achievements and contributions to both the NPMEC and the Royal Government of Cambodia.
He further stated that their contributions uphold national defence, promote peace and development, strengthen international cooperation, and represent the pride and honour of the entire Cambodian nation. Their efforts, he noted, have earned the trust of the Cambodian Prime Minister and helped elevate the prestige of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces on the global stage.
