Phnom Penh to Host the Best Ever Wat Phnom Sankranta
AKP Phnom Penh, March 21, 2025 --
The Phnom Penh capital administration has discussed preparations for its iconic Wat Phnom Sankranta 2025 during the upcoming Khmer New Year to make it the best one ever.
Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh H.E. Koeut Chhe led the preparation discussion with pertinent line departments of the capital administration on Mar. 20.
He highlighted that this year’s Wat Phnom Sankranta needs to be standing out because the government is preparing to get Cambodia Sankranta, the ceremonial event to mark the Khmer New Year, on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
Like in previous years, the organisation of Sankranta in Phnom Penh will take place at its historic and cultural site Wat Phnom (the fact that the event is called Wat Phnom Sankranta) on April 13-16.
The Wat Phnom Sankranta 2025 will feature the welcoming of the New Year’s deity, a Buddha statue parade and other religious practices, Khmer traditional dancing and folk games, music performance, and beyond.
H.E. Koeut Chhe advised his team to repair any broken key structures as well as the playground for children and ensure stunning light decorations, particularly around the Wat Phnom area.
The flow of the events will also be connected to activities at Phnom Penh’s newly opened Walk Street along the river.
