MPWT, AIIB Start Phnom Penh Metro Preliminary Studies

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have started the preliminary study on the Phnom Penh Metro project to assess the feasibility of a modern public transport system to reduce traffic congestion.
The study team held its first meeting on Mar. 5 under the chairmanship of H.E. Leng Thunyuthea, Secretary of State, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, with the participation of AIIB expert team and representatives from relevant ministries and institutions.
The meeting was aimed to review the progress of the project study process and to discuss and collect inputs on the report from experts, consultants, and stakeholders.
Following the discussion, the project implementation team and AIIB experts conducted site visits to key locations in Phnom Penh, including major corridors in Phnom Penh, bus terminals, Phnom Penh Railway Station, Phnom Penh International Airport, Techo International Airport, new development areas, new satellite cities, and other locations.
The purpose was to identify priority routes, bridges, and roadways for the proposed metro system.
The Phnom Penh Metro Rail Project was signed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and AIIB on Sept. 26, 2024 in Beijing, China.
